Free Range Chicken

Grutto’s chickens come from Smallacombe, an organic family farm in Dawlish, Devon, run by Ross Thompson. Ross has a real passion for regeneration of the land, sustainability and animal welfare. He raises Hubbards, a slow-growing, sturdy breed.

The Hubbards’ inquisitive nature makes them perfectly suited to ranging the farm, foraging for nutrient rich, natural food, and this active lifestyle gives the meat its distinctive texture and taste. Their diet is supplemented with an organic, non-GM feed.

The chickens are British Soil Association organic and fully traceable, a very different approach to factory farming. Because of the popularity of chicken breasts, many factory-farmed chickens are only reared for their breasts, wasting the rest of the meat. Our aim at Grutto is to change this; we sell all the meat from the chicken.

Free Range Chicken Cuts

Our Organic Chicken Boxes come in two sizes: 4.3 Kg and 6 Kg. The larger size includes a delicious whole chicken. Can’t wait to unbox yours? Here’s everything you can look forward to:

Organic Whole Chicken

Our organic chickens have a real depth of flavour and sturdy bones because they are given plenty of time to mature and loads of pasture to roam. The whole chickens weigh in at around 1.7 Kg. That’s perfect for your Sunday roast, serving four to five people per chicken. With any luck, you’ll have some left over for sandwiches the next day!

Organic Chicken Breasts with Skin

Chicken breast is the most popular cut in Britain – high in protein and low in fat, quick and easy to prepare, and suitable for so many dishes. Skin-on chicken breast meat is slightly less lean, but it is perfect for pan frying or baking quickly in the oven.

Organic Skinless Chicken Breasts

Our organic chicken breasts (and the rest of our chicken!) are far tastier than factory farmed birds. And they are better for you because the meat is completely natural and additive free. Try poaching them for lean meat that is deliciously tender.

Organic Boneless Chicken Thighs

Chicken thighs come from the top part of the chicken leg. Boneless chicken thighs can be used in nearly all the same recipes as chicken breast – in fact, many people find the thigh meat tastier and juicier. Thighs are particularly mouth-watering when stuffed and pan fried or baked.

Organic Chicken Thighs on the Bone

Chicken thighs on the bone are the chef’s favourite: they may take slightly longer to cook but have the most flavour of all the cuts and keep their shape well. Try them in a curry or on the barbecue.

Organic Chicken Drumsticks

Chicken drumsticks are the lower part of the chicken leg. Juicy, tasty, irresistible, they are often marinated and baked or stewed. Cover them in a sticky glaze and you have a show-stopping finger food for parties. But they also make a great family supper as children love them.

Organic Chicken Wings

Chicken wings, like chicken legs, are known as super tender chicken. The wings are often marinated and then grilled or baked. The wings in our Meat Boxes are meatier than average, but if you want to make the dish more substantial, why not go for a creamy dipping sauce on the side?
