FAQ

Our team is always ready to answer your questions. We would like to hear from you!

How does the ordering process work?

You can buy a share in a pig by clicking on the free range pig hown on the home page. The meat will ultimately be delivered to your house, chilled and vacuum packed, ready to be enjoyed right away or perfect for freezing for later. Our Meat Boxes contain a selection of roasts, cuts, sausages and minced meat products.

The average time between ordering and delivery is about two to four weeks. That’s because the pig you have bought a share in will only be sent for slaughter once it has been 100% crowd-purchased. It will leave for the abattoir on a Thursday and it will take one full week to process, cut and package your box before it is ready for delivery. We'll email you updates throughout the process.

You’ll receive a message when your pig has been completely sold. Next, you’ll be informed when your pig has been sent to the abattoir. It’s at this point that we’ll be able to give you a precise delivery date and you have a final chance to change your delivery details if needed.

Finally, the morning your Meat Box is sent out, our trusted courier APC will send you a track and trace code, a link to their online tracker and an estimated two-hour delivery window.

We deliver on Thursdays between 8am – 6pm

Please note: Changes to your delivery day / address can only be made up to the Friday of the week before the week of your delivery! If you need to make changes after that, we ask that you arrange for the Meat-Box to be stowed in a safe place of your choosing or to have it delivered to a neighbour.

What additives do you use in your products?

We offer you clean meat. We don’t use any E Numbers, added sugar, dyes, or chemicals often found in supermarket meats. Whilst all our meat is gluten-free, please note that our meat products are prepared in an environment where gluten is processed at other times. Our meat is also 100% lactose-free.

We add salt, pepper and other seasonings to some of our products, such as sausages. There is a label on each individual packet that lists the ingredients and shows the nutritional value of the product.

What is the shelf life of the meat?

You’ll find two expiry dates on each individual packet inside your meat box: one for when the meat products are refrigerated and the other for when they are frozen. From the date of delivery, we recommend you consume the meat within one to three days if you choose to refrigerate it. When stored in a freezer — the way most of our customers store their meat — your Grutto meat products will remain fresh for up to three months. After defrosting our meat, you can store the sealed packet in the fridge for one to two days.

How will my pig be slaughtered?

Your pig will be slaughtered by way of captive bolt at a small-scale, family-run abattoir (Code: 8191 EEC) or family-run abattoir (UK 5260 EC).

The pigs are at least five months old when they are slaughtered, depending on their weight.

Is your meat organic?

We currently offer pig from a non-organic farmer. Regardless of certification, our pigs are free range and fed a strictly vegetarian pellet. The only reason not all our farmers are organic certified is that some use their own grass instead of certified feed, when in reality, things don’t get more natural than fresh, chemical-free grass!

How are the pigs cared for?

We're proud to partner with Simon Price, a farmer who feels passionately about free range farming his pigs — ensuring that each pig is reared with the highest standards of animal welfare and environmental stewardship in mind. If we can’t Instagram it, we don't sell it! Whilst each of our farmers has their own set of unique practices (often passed down through the generations), none administer hormones or preventative antibiotics to their stock. That means no guesswork or health risks when your family enjoys our meat. Our pigs are all gilts (females). The pigs are free range, born, reared and finished outdoors on the cliffside fields of Simon’s farm in Sidmouth in Devon. After weaning at around four to five weeks old it takes approximately five months to bring them to the correct weight for pork and bacon. During this time they live in deep straw huts with a large paddock to roam around in and display their natural behaviour. Our farmers are very passionate about using as few chemicals as possible when maintaining their land. Instead, they use natural fertilisers — like the dung produced on their own farms. Can I order extra/different cuts & slices of meat?

No, but there is a good reason for this. It’s important to us that all parts of each pig we sell are used and nothing goes to waste. For that reason, besides slaughtering only once completely sold, our pigs are all processed lengthways (from front to back). This means that each of the (approx.) seven meat boxes that are filled using the carcass of a specific pig will contain an equal mix of cuts and products from its different parts. In this way, each shareholder takes holistic responsibility for the pig they derive meat from, ensuring nothing is thrown away — from nose to tail, everything is valued and appreciated. Because the meat from each pig we sell is portioned and divided to fill approximately seven Meat Boxes, certain cuts aren't included simply because the quantities wouldn’t be big enough to divide into so many boxes. Where this is the case, rest assured that we do still use them: they go into our sausages and pork mince, products that can be easily divided.
